About Us
For more than 80 years, the general business law firm of Spizz Cohen & Serchuk, P.C. has combined traditional professional values with the highest standards of legal service and integrity. Our core values define who we are and how we interact with our clients, the courts, our adversaries and others.
We opened our doors in 1930 as a boutique, primarily representing manufacturers and retailers of women’s wearing apparel and we grew this practice through the depression, World War II, the forties and the fifties. During the early years we developed a large commercial collection practice as well as a bankruptcy practice, primarily focused on the New York City garment industry. Over time, our corporate restructuring practice evolved into a nationwide garment industry practice. The Firm represented hundreds of retailers in Chapter 11 proceedings and out-of-court restructurings, including such nationally known clothing retailers as Bond Clothes, Eagle Clothes, and Hart Schaffner and Marx, as well as numerous local chains around the country. Many of these firms, their principals and their families remain clients to this day. It is noteworthy, that our reputation in the clothing industry enabled us to expand our corporate restructuring practice into other areas of the economy including health care, electronic communications, hospitality, real estate and manufacturing and we continue to be active in this practice area to this day.
Beginning in the 1980s we grew both organically and with strategic mergers as we expanded into other areas of the law. We introduced litigation and corporate practices, actively appearing in a wide range of federal and state courts and developing expertise in corporate governance, securities and mergers and acquisitions. We next developed a high profile estate and trust practice. A tax practice followed, and then we established a presence in international arbitration, in which area we specialize in representing foreign entities doing business in the United States.
More recently, we grew an important real estate practice with significant experience in transactional work, development, condo and coop conversions, and in dealing with the relevant government agencies. Then, in 2003, we acquired the professional talent to establish a banking and financial services practice which today represents a few of the world’s money center banks as well as community banks, other financial institutions and entities which service such institutions. Our highest profile activities with this client base includes the full range of regulatory counseling on both the state and federal levels as well as real estate secured and asset base lending.
Through our membership in national and international legal networks such as Lawyer’s Associated Worldwide, we have consistently kept pace with changing trends in the worlds of law, economics and our national and foreign cultures. We take pride in the fact that, over the years, we have helped healthy companies grow and troubled companies get back on track. Our mission has been, and will always be, to provide our clients with first rate professional help in the most cost efficient fashion.
