Ivan Serchuk, Chairman of the Firm's Banking and Financial Services Practice Group, has been selected for inclusion in the 2014 Edition of the Best Lawyers in America for his work in the practice areas of Banking and Finance Law, Financial Services Regulation Law and Litigation – Banking and Finance.

On May 20, 2013, Alex Spizz the co- chair of our Corporate Restructuring Department was elected the bankruptcy Chapter 7 trustee of Ampal- American Israel Corporation (“Ampal”). Ampal which was formed in 1942, was a publicly traded NASD investment holding company, owning at one time an interest in over 70 subsidiaries operating in the Middle East and Europe. Ampal currently owns a shopping center in Haifa, wind farms in Greece and Poland, a major chemical company in Israel, and an interest in a company which owns and operates the gas pipeline between Egypt and Israel. The change in the political climate caused by the Arab Spring, resulted in disruptions of gas production and supply which in turn resulted in Ampal not being able to pay its debts and having to file for bankruptcy protection.

Recently the Firm has successfully handled two (2) appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. The first Gasser Chair Co. Inc v Amboy National Bank 11-3777, affirmed a judgment obtain by the firm on behalf of its client Gasser Chair Co. in the amount of $1,300,000. The case was tried by Alex Spizz who also argued the appeal. Jill Makower, counsel to firm assisted on the brief. The other case is Zerega Avenue Realty v Hornbeck Offshore Transportation 12-1543. The appeals court affirmed a judgment obtained by the firm on behalf its client Zerega Avenue Realty in the amount of $1,800,000. The case was also tried by Alex Spizz, who argued the appeal as well. Stephen Oestreich senior counsel and Rebecca Hollis an associate assisted on the brief.

The Litigation and the Banking and Finance Departments of the Firm received the prestigious Tier 1 ranking in the 2013 edition of U.S. News-Best Lawyers "Best Law Firms" both on the national list and on the metropolitan New York list.
Janice B. Grubin elected to the New York Network Board of the International Women's Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation and appointed Substantive Program Coordinator.

Janice B. Grubin has been appointed by the Board of Directors of the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York, to serve as Chair of its Judiciary Committee, after having served as Vice Chair effective October 1, 2012.

Spizz Cohen & Serchuk, P.C. was named as one of the top-ranked law firms in the New York metropolitan area by Lexis-Nexis, Martindale-Hubbell. The award was published in editions of Fortune Magazine and New York Magazine.
Wesley Chen was a guest speaker at the 15th Annual Conference of the Association of Trade and Forfaiting in the Americas held in Miami. His speech focused on the legal and business metrics that he developed for structuring transactions with companies in the People’s Republic of China as well as lessons learned in structuring international corporate and trade finance transactions over the course of three decades.

Once again, Ivan Serchuk, Chairman of the Firm's Banking and Financial Services Department and Paul Richard Karan, Chairman of the Firm’s Trusts and Estates Department have been selected for inclusion in Narfah and Smith’s Best Lawyers in America the 2012 edition of the New York area's Best Lawyers.
Rebecca Hollis has been nominated to serve as Secretary to the New York State Bar Association's Commercial and Federal Litigation Section and will also serve on the Executive Committee of the Section.
